Camera Work produced
in New York between 1903 and 1917, is considered the most beautiful
photographic journal ever published, and one of the most influential.
Thirty-five issues and nineteen duplicate issues had to be dry cleaned,
tears repaired, losses filled, pages guarded and reattached, covers
restored, it’s edges lined and attached to spines. |
ENGRAVING |
 |
|
This 19th
- Century engraving was severely damaged and weakened. The treatment
included surface cleaning followed by water washing in deionized
water, local whitening and tear repair. Flattening to plane
and deacidification has returned the object to museum-quality
condition. |

The French Daguerreotype
was opened, and losses in the black pigment on the hand painted glass
(french mat) were inpainted with black Liquitex. A black liner was
cut from 2Ply Mylar. These two layers lie between the glass mat and
the plate edges. Behind the plate is a sheet of Mylar to separate
the plate from the final board backing. All of these components were
sealed at the edges with Filmoplast P91tape. |
